Q:  What is the "Kona Barista Jam?"


A:
A barista jam is just what it sounds like- a gathering of like-minded coffee folk who teach, learn, explore, and geek out on all things coffee. In this case, it is a 5 hour event where baristas will educate other baristas about espresso, milk texturing, cupping, and by-the-cup brewing. There’s also a short session to prepare folks for the Ultimate Barista Challenge Hawaii, taking place the following day.


Q:  What is the "Ultimate Barista Challenge(R)?"


A:  
Taken directly from the UBC(R)'s webpage, the UBC is: "an action packed competition where baristi, someone who professionally prepares coffee, compete in a dueling stage of identical espresso stations to shake, not stir, their espresso cocktails, to prepare beautiful caffe latte art, blend espresso frappe and brew the best they have. Each barista has a tight 10 minutes to prepare drinks in each category and serve to a discerning professional tasting judges panel comprised of coffee specialists, trainers, food writers, chefs or sommeliers before a live audience to win the right to challenge the reigning champion and in turn become "The Ultimate Barista." "



Q: What is latte art?


A: 
Latte art is created when the barista prepares silky steamed milk and infuses espresso and with an artistic flair. The baristi pours the milk into the espresso creating intricate designs and patterns in silky white milk and rich browns of the espresso. Judges evaluate on details in designs, clarity, balance, originality and taste, harmonious, sweetness, milk to espresso. 


Q: What is an espresso frappe?


A:  
Espresso Frappe, ingredients of the barista choice are blended with espresso and ice to create a cool drink of espresso essence with other complimentary flavors. Both drinks must taste as good as they look. No alcohol is permitted. The word frappe introduced by Julia Child in the 50's, french for whipped, which we interpret as blended.
